Audible is fun but I'm a little bit unclear on how the scoring actually works...sometimes I feel as though I get punished for choosing popular players only and sometimes it seems to be both popularity in the draft and rating.

It’s both. You gain overall for rarer picks, lose it for common picks, then after the bonuses/penalties are applied, are stacked up with the opposition.
