While playing the game, I ended up with a roster that has a higher point total than the given optimal roster. Is this intended, so the optimal team is defined by position groups rather than overall score?

I don't know for sure if this is the reason but some positions are weighted heavier than others in the ultimate team score. Could be that DB is weighted heavier than F7B and your -8.2 influenced the overall score more than the +8.5.
